Residents of Mitchell County are using their cultural assets and history to develop an entrepreneurial approach to economic development through the creation and marketing of locally produced products as well as to provide added support to the county’s cultural tourism industry. This project is known as “The Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree.” This project is based on the internationally acclaimed book, The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree, by local author/educator, Dr. Gloria Houston, set in her home town, Spruce Pine.

Over 50 products from local crafts people are represented in “The Home of the Perfect Christmas Tree” shop on Upper Street in Spruce Pine. The shop is open year round, Monday thru Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. A regional launch of products will occur from October – December, 2006 in 6 Mast General Stores located in Valle Crucis, Boone, Asheville, Waynesville, and Hendersonville, North Carolina, and Knoxville, Tennessee. A catalog featuring over 38 products will be available in October, 2006.
